We're Still Here

Story Behind The Song

I have always thought that when hearing the story of a loss, it is the ones who are still here who deserve the most attention. I have often gotten preturbed when listening to someone who has suffered a loss speak of their loss, while obviously neglecting those who are still here. I always feel for them and wanted to write a song on their behalf.

Song Description

This is about a guy who was born and raised in Georgia. He was raised by a farmer Daddy and grew up enjoying a simple life. He married the woman of his dreams and had two kids with her. Shortly after the kids were born, he lost his wife and was then left with two kids to raise alone. He is suffering the loss of his wife and is lonely, constantly dreaming of all that they had together. But he's got two beautiful children, a boy and a girl, who are growing up in spite of him. He is very proud of them and boasts of their accomplishments as any proud father would. His kids, however, keep asking him to move on and not be so sad. They continually remind him, "We're Still Here and we love you Daddy."

Lyrics

We?re Still Here
Words and Music by Terri Marinaro (c) 2003

I was born down in Georgia, a peach tree farmer?s life.
Just outside Atlanta I took you as my wife.
I had grown to be a man, the man my Daddy raised me to be.

You wanted two children. I always wanted three.
Its funny how you knew then, the way it was gonna be.
I?ll never understand why life took a turn on me.

Pre Chorus:
You knew all along, you simply weren?t that strong.
But my boy and my little girl finally came along.
And just when we were a family
God see fit to take you from me.

Chorus:
Now I sing this song for you.
I spend my nights dreaming of days of me and you.
The kids tell me, ?Dad, please don?t look so sad.
We?re still here. And we love you, Dad.?

I?ve tried so hard to fight it, this emptiness inside.
The kids I know they need me, to see them through their lives.
I see you in their eyes, their smile is such a comfort to me.

Josh is playin? little league, Dawn lost her two front teeth.
He?s pitchin? for his team now. She loves to dance and sing.
Each day I?m amazed at the things they both teach me.

Repeat Pre Chorus

Repeat Chorus

Bridge:
Life takes a toll, I know.
I?ll never understand, but I do the best I can.
And then I hear them whisperin? in my ear

Repeat Chorus

Last line of Final Chorus: We?re still here, we?re still here (Spoken) and we love you, Daddy.
