Road To Liberation

Story Behind The Song

"Road To Liberation" is a song that I felt was necessary to write in order to address some of the elements within the revolutionary movement that seem to hold us back. For one, there's a false notion that in order to be a revolutionist, you have to be a front-line soldier ready to fight a civil war. Although aspects of our movement may encompass armed struggle / community self-defense units, that is not what being a freedom fighter comes down to. It's about having a concrete committment to the community within the framework of the broader struggle. Like I say on the song, teachers play a role. Youth service workers play a role. The only way we can win this fight is for all of us to hold some kind of committment that utilizes our own individual strengths for the benefit of us all. I also felt the need to speak about being solution-oriented. At times, we spend too much energy focusing on theory and not applying those theories through practice. The knowledge is important, of course. But, let's keep it real -- it doesn't mean shit unless actions arise as a result of that knowledge.

Song Description

"Road To Liberation" is a bonafide theme song for the revolution -- a call to the masses of people to become involved in the process of building our communities and having "conrete committments" to the struggle. The song speaks of the decadence of the capitalist system and the need to abolish all hierarchies in order to create a new society based on genuine freedom, equality, and socialst democracy. The record pushes for those who take the movement seriously to be action-oriented instead of just talking about what needs to be done.

Lyrics

(Intro)
Yeah... Wake up, wake up (Wake up, wake up). Eyes open, eyes open (Eyes open, eyes open). Fist clenched, fist cleched (fist clenched, fist clenched). You know, gotta get our shit together -- focused, determined, disciplined. Each one teach one. (Exactly). And we finna move forward...

(Verse One)
You gon' stand with the masses or with the rich ones?
You gotta make a choice my son
Is you livin' for yourself or you livin' for us?
It's strength in numbers, in that we trust
Be aware of your enemy, know your position
You can't know yourself if you don't know THEY missions
It's concrete committments, what we about
Set to mash out from the north to the south
community control means we all involved
heavy on the job 'till this shit gets solved
Ain't all gotta be on the block with AKs
We need to have teachers, those who trained
in health care and services for the youth
ain't about individuals, it's bout the group
Break bread evenly, split the pie
a piece for us all, it's for that we fight
Damn right!

(CHORUS) (X2)
The road to liberation starts inside
gotta get yourself situated to ride
Possessing the truth, you a dangerous man
but your actions is what's gonna change the plan

(VERSE TWO)
No peace without justice, gotta confront this
Two mil behind bars, who in here runs shit?
Rich white males in the corporate office
plus in the senate, it's time to off this
order, this system, this way of life
my herores are poor, damn right (Aiight!)
My hereos are every color, working class
both men and women, no kissin' ass
'cause fuck a higher up who be looking down!
Them hierarchies gotta come crumblin' down
This system of wages, exploitation
where is our say in the process placing?
more and more in THEY hands, while ownership
slips from our grasp, we just loaning shit
we spend our lifetimes paying it off
but the land is all ours 'cause we all a boss!
(Yeah!)

(CHORUS) (X2)

(OUTRO)
Yeah... All my souljahs in the field, you already know what it is. You know, it's said that a man has two options -- you can either build or destroy. You know, in this case, we crumbling and re-building... Let's keep the focus, let's keep the motivation, let's keep the flame burning... Eyes open! G'z Up! People over profits! Marcel Cartier...
