Story Behind The Song
Well, since I?m only 5?2? most things are ?bigger than me?. Okay, bad joke. I was having lunch by myself one day and thinking about my songwriting aspirations. I started scanning the room and realized that I was probably the only person in the restaurant thinking about something like this. So I thought, ?why do I write songs?? Then I remembered that what made me start writing songs in the first place was my passion for music and for self-expression. I don?t write songs because I want to; I write songs because I have to. So I thought, ?there must be a reason bigger than me for wanting to do this, either to help me or to help somebody else?. Then realized that ?bigger than me? is a song. I immediately started writing lyrics on the back of a to-go menu and had the song completed before I ate the last bite of my chicken sandwich. I?m pretty sure that if thinking I?m a misfit inspires a song, then I truly am a misfit. :) I had seen the movie ?A Walk To Remember? a couple of weeks before writing this song. In the movie, the goody-goody preacher?s daughter falls for the rebellious, but popular, atheist boy at school. She tells him, ?faith is like the wind. I can?t see it, but I can feel it?. I just loved that idea, so I incorporated that into the bridge of this song. Starting from the bridge and continuing to the end of the song, it?s a prayer to God to help me be a good mother to my daughter. ?Regardless of circumstance, help me be the mother that she needs.? It also points out that if you need proof of God, just look into the eyes of a child and you will see Him. I like that my daughter is a part of this song, and she refers to it as "the song my Mama wrote about me".
Song Description
This song is as autobiographical as it can get. Most of my songs are written about other people, but this song is all about me. Sure, I like a new pair of shoes. I enjoy dining in a nice restaurant. And I want success as much as the next person. But I understand that there are other things that are so much more important....like God, my daughter, my family and friends. These are the things that truly define us. The rest is just scenery.

Lyrics
I?ll admit I like to win
And hear a ?that a girl? every now and then
A pat on the back, a compliment feels okay
I?d like to see my name in lights
I?d like to sail my ship into paradise
I want things that sparkle and shine, but glitter fades
And at the end of the day, I want to hear them say
she gives more than she takes
Cause there is something bigger than me
How will they remember me
Did I laugh enough
Did I give, did I love
Did I make an offering
To something that is bigger than me
I could quickly make a list
Of this or that I need to bring me happiness
I?d like to be the best of the best at anything
Is it wisdom or age, experience or grace
That helps me find my way
To something that is bigger than me
And what I want the world to see
Is a beauty from within
That only comes when I give unselfishly
To something that is bigger than me
Let the sun shine down on me
Let the wind blow soft upon my skin
Let the rain wash my fears away
Let me live if only just to live
For something that is bigger than me
A love, a light, a legacy
I look in my daughter?s eyes
And know I leave behind a reason to believe
In something that is bigger than me
Something that is bigger than me
Something that is bigger than me
