Filmed Entertainment (Motion Pictures, Television, and Video) The U.S. filmed entertainment industry encompasses movie theaters, TV subscriptions and electronic home video consumption. Box office receipts are projected to grow from $9.9 billion in 2016 to $10.9 billion in 2020, an increase of 1.2%. Home video will reach $20.9 billion, up from $20 billion in 2016 during the same period, and of that, both streaming video and TV video on-demand will jump from $11 billion to over $15 billion by 2020. The United States has a mature subscription TV market and thanks to rising bundle prices and premium service increases, will grow modestly from $101.8 billion to $102.3 billion by 2020. Box office numbers are expected to grow as theaters: adopt digital screens; ticket prices rise; diversify concession options, including full meals; sell movie or brand related merchandise; and offer membership discounts, to attract viewership. The digital transition is undeniable. Traditionally the industry consisted of multinational umbrella corporations, major studios, and independent studios or "indies". Today, multichannel networks engage in the filmed entertainment sector, with the most excitement around virtual reality. While major studios still produce traditional blockbusters, the industry is simultaneously moving to different formats as consumer habits change. Many of the leading motion picture studios are part of larger media conglomerates that often include television, video and streaming services, music services, newspaper, cable and magazine segments, and much of this constitutes online content. The U.S. filmed entertainment sector enjoyed a trade surplus of $16.3 billion in 2014 (latest data available). The industry offers attractive possibilities for foreign investors, both large and small, and provides film production tax incentives. Across all sectors, there are opportunities for investments and growth both in joint partnerships, production and tax discounts in many U.S. States, and the creation of TV formats and content for streaming. With the shift toward digital production and distribution, foreign firms are seeking out U.S. digital and animation expertise, and new formats. Drawing on formidable strengths, the U.S. film industry has a proven ability to produce blockbuster movies that generate hundreds of millions of dollars, including revenues from distribution across strong domestic and international networks. Success in the industry is based on creativity and financing, and the industry is largely self-regulated. The U.S. market has a large talent pool of writers, actors, producers, directors and technical experts, and is home to a variety of film crews, post-production firms, backdrops and infrastructure to support production. U.S. filmmakers also receive critical protections for their intellectual property. Music The U.S. recorded music industry (including concerts and touring) grew to $15.5 billion in 2016, up from $15 billion in 2015. Thanks to streaming and live music, the U.S. recorded music industry is expected to surpass $18 billion by 2020 ($16 billion from streaming services and live music alone). While the U.S. is still the largest global music market and it is essential for a company interested in global operations to establish a presence in the vibrant and highly diverse U.S. music market, competition is strong from European and Asian markets. Digital technologies have revolutionized the music industry by creating high-quality, low-cost recording technologies and digital distribution, along with the proliferation of devices to download and listen to music. Future industry growth is likely to be among companies outside the soon-to-be big three worldwide record companies - Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group - as the United States has a robust independent music (or "indie") sector. Indies often rely on partnerships with the largest labels in the global market to prevent illegal file sharing. Many companies in the industry have diversified, signing sync deals with vertical businesses for TV ads, in-flight entertainment, satellite radio, restaurants, touring, live entertainment, and merchandise. Digital music sales took over physical sales for the first time in 2014 and the trend is expected to continue. The United States also has the world's largest performance rights market and earns half of global sync revenues. Publishing Book publishing reached $39 billion in 2016, measured across professional, educational, and consumer segments. Consumer books cover the largest sector, but educational textbooks have the highest growth. The U.S. publishing sector is the largest in the world. By 2020, digital publishing will account for 45 percent of all publishing. Print publishing continues to decline in the United States, as witnessed by the decline in book stores. Interestingly, online retailer Amazon has opened physical book stores (for both physical and ebooks), which is indicative of the industry continuing to explore what consumers want most in their reading experiences. eBooks and eReaders have not taken off at the speed expected as consumers tend to like devices that have multiple capabilities (phone, music, internet, etc.). More than 70 percent of Americans own a smart phone, roughly 45 percent own a tablet, and one in five adults own an eReader. The United States has a prolific publishing sector with many world renowned authors. They are also competing in a digital marketplace that encourages self-publishing. Video Games Video games have become a $100 billion industry that is constantly innovating and bringing new applications to market. The United States alone holds about $17.6 billion in consumer and ad revenues alone. The traditional gaming sector includes video games for personal computers and game consoles. Today's consumers have access to multiple devices, whether mobile phone or tablet. The sector is comprised of physical, digital, and online games, subscription services mobile apps, and virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR). The industry has evolved quickly in the social and casual gaming sector, where live competitions have become popular. Electronic sports, also known as "esports" or "e-sports", includes professional gaming, in which players compete before a live audience.
