Lenny

Story Behind The Song

This is a story of my father. My father moved from upstate NY to California when he was about 40. Lenny is my uncle who lives in Virginia. My father would talk to Lenny on the phone and say he really should come out and see California. Time goes by with the best intentions of Lenny visiting California. My father passed away and we all flew out to California for the funeral. Lenny is also a music leader for his church, so it was natural for him to be the leader of the funeral ceremony in California. he got up on stage and told everyone what my father said to him on the phone.....Lenny, you're got to see this place. He then mentioned he can hear my father say the same thing at that moment.....Lenny , you've got to see this place (his voice in heaven). It was a moment of hope, knowing that everything will be ok, and someday, Lenny will see my father again.

Lyrics

Lenny
Words and Music by Virgil Cain

A brother moves out to California
Takes a home to the west side USA
40 years of dreams have waited patiently to meet him
In between Barstow and LA

New York sister, New York mother, 7 scattered east coast brothers
He keeps in touch with every one
The youngest one is Lenny
Virginia minutes are 5 pennies
They?re ear to ear on weekend nights

Chorus:
Lenny
You've got to see this place
Its got everything, but I'm missing your embrace
As you hear my voice, listen to the smile on my face
You know Lenny
You've got to see this place

Lenny says everything's going just right
He says ?I've got Suzie and my healthy baby Layne
All through the week they hear me practicing
Some melodies that I'm gonna bring to
Share and sing on a Sunday morning stage?

I'm so happy for you Len
Can you give my love to them
Bring them out soon if you can
Pacific sun in San Clemente
We'll take the 60 to the 91
Reminiscing all the way

Chorus
Break

Lenny flies out to California
A red eye flight from JFK
Steel wings fly saddened, saddened east coast faces
To a place where they all can say goodbye

The past before them flashes, now pictures, flowers, ashes
Lenny takes the Tuesday stage
He says "As I flew across the nation, I recalled a conversation
It's a celebration here today

I can hear him call from a different place

Chorus
