Story Behind The Song
This was inspired by friends of mine who live in Eastern Oregon. The guy works all over the west, laying fiber optic cable. He drives his old blue pickup down to Wyoming, Nevada, Oklahoma, and works for weeks, then comes home to his girlfriend. He was my hunting guide last year during elk season, and he has led a sad life of divorce and a car accident. Despite all this he is positive and happy, and has a dog that travels everywhere with him. His girlfriend has also been knocked around in life, full hip replacement in her early forties, her husband died when she was in her early thirties and she lost the ranch they owned together. She endures and finds love and satisfaction in her life with her elk camps she runs, her daughter and son and the boyfriend she shares her life with now. They are so much like so many other people, lives with some joy and some tragedy, living out in the high desert that stretches across this country from the Mississipi to the West Coast. I wrote this song for them and the love they have for each other.

VERSE 1
Long Drive on the Prarie
Long Way from home
Sometimes I have to go, girl
Life’s not my own
Long time away from you
And our little farm
Can’t wait to get home to you
Where it’s nice and warm
CHORUS
I’m comin home (Long Drive on the Prarie) 3X
Comin home to you.
VERSE 2
Long Distance phone calls
Just not the same
Want to hold you close at night girl
Whisper out your name
Every town I pass through, (Every little town)
Each face I see, (Every smiling face)
Reminds of my home town baby
Where I want to be
CHORUS
REFRAIN
I can see my home, (On the prarie)
If I close my eyes, (On the prarie)
Sittin by the fire
You by my side

Long Drive on the Prarie, Lyrics, pg. 2
VERSE 3
Drivin this old truck along
Just a few miles to go
Wind blows through the sagebrush
Just a skiff of snow
Soon I’ll see the lights ahead
Turn down our lane
Dogs will run and bark at me
I’ll be home again
CHORUS
REFRAIN
(I’m comin’ home)
