Story Behind The Song
"Damn Skippy" is an original country song written by Shawn Ash, CJ Solar, and David St. Romain (of Nashville Star Season 5 fame). This song is all about the good life--where we don't take things too seriously, love helping our neighbors, and honor the men and women who sacrificed for our freedoms. When those Red, White, and Blue colors fly, we stand proud, hats off and hands over our hearts. Damn Skippy, y'all--this life is pretty good.
Behind the Song:
If you've never heard the phrase "Damn Skippy," it's just another way of saying "Damn right" or *"Damn straight." I first picked it up while living in Missoula, MT with my dad--and it stuck.
Back in 2011, my buddy CJ Solar invited me to his CD release party in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. CJ, then a freshman at Belmont University, had been helping me write songs for my album. His parents, Kay and Curtis Solar, graciously let me crash in their pool house.
On day two, CJ said we were heading to country artist David St. Romain's house for a writing session. I was pumped--I'd seen David on Nashville Star and loved his performance of "Wave on Wave." When we arrived, David looked a little annoyed. Turns out, his wife had just bought an $8,000 hypoallergenic cat, and David's allergies were flaring up.
We sat down (cat temporarily removed) and started tossing around song ideas--what Nashville writers call "weeds." When it was my turn, I said "Damn Skippy." CJ looked confused, but David was all in: "Hell yeah, we're writing that one." He explained the phrase to CJ, and in about an hour, the three of us finished the song. It came together fast--and it's always been one of my favorites.

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Our kind of Cadillac is a tractor bailin' hay
We don't buy designer clothes, cuz there ain't no Tarjey
Momma always told me it's better to give than receive
Our life is kind of simple man and that's all right with me
[Chorus 1]
Damn skippy we like our farmer tans
Damn skippy we drink em by the can
There's no doubt this ain't no Hollywood
Damn skippy this life is pretty good
[Verse 2]
We grow our medicine, straight off the vine
Wash it back with a little, apple moonshine
Grandaddy taught me how to fish when I was 10
Now I cast one every Sunday, to remember him
[Chorus 2]
Damn Skippy we love this promised land
Damn Skippy when those colors fly we stand
There's no doubt this ain't no hollywood
Damn Skippy this life is pretty good
[Verse 3]
We get our water straight from the well
Eat lots of red meat that ain't bought off a shelf
Daddy told me to wear it right there on my sleeve
Red, white, and blue yawl is what freedom means to me
[ Instrumental Out]
[Chorus 3]
Damn skippy we love our toes in the sand
Damn skippy we sing along with the band
There's no doubt this ain't no hollywood
Damn Skippy this life is pretty good
Damn Skippy this life is pretty good
