Story Behind The Song
This song is based on my feelings about the years I spent traveling on the road with my music. Going from town to town, doing shows and festivals and how free I felt, but there is an underlying struggle financially and emotionally.
Song Description
This is a song about the choices one has to make, if they want to have a life filled with music, AND they haven't made it big. This person's feeling free and enjoying the ride, but doesn't have a dime to show for it.

Lyrics
Rent Free
Music and Lyrics by Mary Ott Copyright 2001
In the hollows, in the shadows, in the back room.
We commit our art, we tuck and bloom.
They say a man?s gotta do what a man?s gotta do.
But who pays the bills when you hear a different tune.
Chorus:
I?m livin? Rent Free
Livin? on borrowed time
When they come to collect me
They?ll find I haven?t a dime.
No time to ease up
Got to forge ahead
Want to make a difference
Before I?m dead.
Bridge:
There was a time
When widows wore weeds
For a year
Sadness expressed, released and at rest,
Never feared.
Oh, there is a notion, Nothing gets done without constant motion.
