Dancing Jane

Story Behind The Song

During a period when I was putting on concerts for audiences of children at schools and daycares, I fulfilled my need for material by writing a number of children's songs. This one was intended to portray a good old-fashioned memorable image of true love.

Song Description

A fanciful love-affair between two lovely, imaginary figures produces a pleasant, meaningful meditation for children's audiences.

Lyrics

Dancing Jane, dances in the moonlight-

Stepping through the flowers at twilight,

Animals and birds, and children gather 'round

When Dancing Jane comes dancing into town!

She hops and she skips and she steps so lightly,

Twirling and whirling and smiling so brightly;

If she had two wings, I'm sure that she could fly

Like a graceful bird into the summer sky!

Dancing Bob dances in the city streets,

Saying, "How do you do?" to everyone he meets;

He's stepping up high, bowing down low;

He'll be dancing everywhere you go.

He spins and he grins in the bright city light,

Scatters music from his fingers as he leaps in the night;

The children laugh and shout beneath the yellow moon

Saying, "Dancing Bob, please come again soon!"

One spring day, when the sunshine was a-glist'ning,

Love was in the air, the robins were a-nesting:

'Twas in a golden field, down by the sparkling sea,

That Bob and Jane both happened to be.

Walking so softly, he went up to her,

Shyly, she turned, and she said,"Who are you, sir?"

"'Dancing Bob' by name!" he answered with a smile,

"Oh, Dancing Jane, would you dance with me a while?"

Hand in hand, they began to dance together,

Like nothing seen before, and never seen after;

What they shared alone, no one knows but they,

But something wondrous happened on that day!

We can dance alone, but it's far better

To lay aside ourselves. and learn to dance together;

"One and one make two", but two can be as one,

When hearts unite beneath the smiling sun!
