The Thinking Song

Story Behind The Song

This was the first song I wrote for piano accompaniment, and it originally had more of a Carole King tempo. A few years ago, I re-recorded it with a more bluesy arrangement to allow the melody to breathe a bit more. The words were inspired by a high school classmate who lived her life under a rain cloud.

Song Description

The first two verses relate memories from a man who has been in a depressing relationship with someone. In the third verse, he displays some tongue-in-cheek optimism about the future.

Lyrics

Our ways are changing like we can't remember when
But still we keep our sense of humor
And if our friends have never been where we have been
They'll figure that we're only two more

Of the crowd that flees the home of individuality
And stumbles onto what they think is true reality
They're playin' all the games that suit their high mentality
Oh, that's what they'll be thinkin'
Yes, that's what they'll be thinkin'

They're not the ones that made us what we are
It's not for them to say we've gone too far

Tomorrow is the day that you will turn to me
And maybe tell me I should go home
And if you'll listen then I'll try to make you see
That if I leave you I'll have no home

And I'll try to play the martyr through my sacrifice
Everybody ought to be a martyr once or twice
And when people fall in love they've got to pay the price
Ain't that what you've been thinking?
Ain't that what you've been thinking?

You know I'd chase you to the highest peak
If love were just a game of hide and seek

I guess I've told you all I have to say to you
And yet I've barely made a scratch
I guess I'll never even find my way to you
I'll wait for someone new to hatch

I'll find a brand new pup to teach the same old tricks
I'll show her how to beg and maybe pick up sticks
She'll even sit beside me when we're at the flicks
Oh, that's what I've been thinking
Yes, that's what I've been thinking

And if I love her and she loves me too
It ought to last about a week or two
