Story Behind The Song
Jim Free, chief of police in Rome/Floyd County, came to me with his 'testimony' poem, and commissioned me to put it to music. After reading the poem, and hearing him tell me about his life, I knew that this one had to be in the 'story style' of country.

Lyrics
When I woke up this morning, I was filled with despair.
All my dreams had turned to ashes and gold. My life was bare.
So I sat on the edge of my bed, and tried to figure out
how my life had become so empty.
This revelation started coming to me...
That a heart without Jesus, could not live.
Without Jesus I'd have nothing to give.
Without Jesus I'd have nothing at all.
Without Jesus in my life, I would surely fall.
I had conquered the world, and tasted offerings of sin.
But then what did I have: no hope, no peace within.
I had a wife and children who loved only me.
But my eyes were not set on Jesus.
I was blinded and could not see...
That my heart without Jesus, could not live.
Without Jesus I'd have nothing to give.
Without Jesus I'd have nothing at all.
Without Jesus in my life, I would surely fall.
I could soar the heavens. I could sail the seas.
I had conquered the world, but that really meant nothing to me.
'Cause I have finally found it, through the painful lessons of life. And now my eyes are on Jesus and my heart can fully see...
That my heart without Jesus, cannot live.
Without Jesus I have nothing to give.
Without Jesus I have nothing at all.
Without Jesus in my life...
Without Jesus in my life, I would surely fall.
