Different Music

Story Behind The Song

This isn't autobiographical, just a reflection on the idea that sometimes cultural differences keep relationships from working, no matter how much people might want them to work.

Different Music

He was green as his mountains, she could shine like her city
He was quiet, she was pretty, and they never had a chance
They were strong, they were willing, they were in love but it was killing them
Her city's rhythms gave her wings, his heart was tuned to fiddle strings
They moved to different music when they danced

They met by chance - as lovers do he said, "I'll follow you"
He wore a suit and rode the subway - for a while it felt brand new
She showed him streets the world loves and concerts in the park
Stadiums and little spots that she liked after dark
But she watched him turn inside himself, she began to feel alone
She said, "You're dying every day, it's time to take you home

(chorus)

He showed her foggy ridges where streams fall and disappear
They walked through mossy hollows, and for just about a year
It was enough to be there with him, then her soul began to stir
He knew he'd found himself again but he was losing her

(bridge)
She said, "love can't always conquer, like we've heard"
He said, "You're right" - and neither one could say another word

She flew back to her city, leaving half her heart behind
He sometimes walks his creeks all night, like he has lost his mind

He was green as his mountains, she could shine like her city
He was quiet, she was pretty, and they never had a chance
