Northern Climes

Music and Lyrics by: Bill Dake

Copper cool and nickel bright
Frozen moon framed in anthracite
With two ruddy faces we taste the breeze
Blowin' winter sharp
Through the skeleton trees
A good excuse for sippin' antifreeze

Most of our friends have eased away
Off to the dessert for their final days
To bleach their bones in the cactus sun
Trustin' the heat to keep them ever young
'Till their dancin' dreams are done

But, you and I
We'll stick it out in these Northern Climes
Where the mountains hold court
Over the valley pines
And rivers speak in crystal tongues
Of grizzly bears and midnight suns
Where stars that set cold hearts aflame
Flood the sky with silver rain

Huddled together in our wrinkled skin
Laughin' and grinnin' at the bitter wind
You're a snow princess, I'm a troubadour
Caught up in magic, can't ignore
The aurora borealis kissin' heaven's door

So we'll
Finish it up in these Northern Climes
Where the mountains hold court
Over the valley pines
And rivers speak in crystal tongues
Of grizzly bears and midnight suns
Where stars that set cold hearts aflame
Flood the sky with silver rain

When our time finally ends, as it does for us all
Hope they'll scatter our dust, pray they'll let it fall
High
In these Northern Climes

Very James Taylor vocal.

Instant mood, I really like that. It sets the listener up for a nice, flowing trip through this song.

Dreamy Folk with beautiful storytelling. Solid lyrics and delivered well. Well produced and pro production all around. Well done.

Bill Dake is a rembrandt of lyricists...he paints vivid colorful wordscapes that will touch the imagination of his lucky listeners...

I like the melody quite a bit, and the groove/styling lends itself to so many different sync opportunities. I think it's a special tune, with very good lyrics overall. Nicely done and I look forward to hearing more of your work.

Bit of a Steely Dan sound. Nice visuals in the lyrics.

Nice intro. Some songwriters are poets; some are great lyricists. This writer is both. The lyrics could stand on their own as a poem but the composer has aptly put them to a meditative melody. The word pictures in this song are absolutely phenomenal. What can be better than the aurora borealis kissing heaven's door? There was a lot of thought put into the writing of this song that speaks of retiring in the north instead of Arizona where their wrinkled friends are bleaching their bones in the cactus sun. Love the "snow princess and troubador". Great word pictures throughout. This song is expertly crafted from start to finish. There isn't a thing I would change about it.

you always bring good stuff to the surface......the approach is unmatched....

Nice mood-setting vocal and instrumental arrangement. There's a John Sebastian-like quality to this song. Very cool.

Very poetic! A descript recalling of youth into adulthood and then into the golden years.. a swan song.

A real island-y feel to this tune. The approach is very James Mee from Vermont. The personal touch of the lyric grabs the ear.

I like the lead vocals a lot - sounds a little like James Taylor. I really like the sound of the piano as well.

Lots of word pictures. Almost a sensory overload. I would have been more comfortable with a little less to think about. Sometimes, simpler lyrics give a song broader appeal. This one could use a little simplification, to communicate with a larger audience. The instrumentation on the song was tasteful and appropriate. Respectfully submitted, CowboySlim

This is very very beautiful. It is really different in a wonderful wonderful way. It has great instrumentation. The vocals and harmonies are right on. The lyrics take back to an old time which we will never see again. The arrangement is very complex but so beautiful.

Very smooth vocal, reminds me of JT. The music is very soulful and very well performed. The raindrop piano parts really make for a nice feel. A real "feel good" number! Thanks it let me with a nice warmth.

Great recording, the harmonies are so natural and really add a lot to the song. I loved the piano work and the singer's voice is very strong. A lot of good imagery in the lyrics.
