Balancing Act

Story Behind The Song

I wrote this after listening to Patti Smith's breakout "Horses". I was thinking about money and ruminating on the many imbalances that I and those around me experience in modern life. All these things channeled into the song.

Song Description

"Balancing Act" falls second on Time's Pearly Wounds, shifting the mood of the EP from dreamy and ethereal to slightly more surreal - perhaps even bordering on nightmarish. Neatly-controlled vocals bend, slide, and crack to create an unsettled atmosphere, supported by gainy guitars and howling background voices. Throughout the song, Levi's haunting voice is addressing someone (a friend, perhaps, or a lover), telling them that "Life is simple, baby / It's a balancing act." The lyrics are clearly facetious, spinning common platitudes against a musical backdrop that creates unease and dissonance.

Lyrics

Life is simple, baby It's a balancing act Learn to juggle, baby Life's a sum of monthly expenses Death comes dearly, baby It's a balancing act Love and be loved, baby ? Death leaves no artifact ?And whoever came up with the idea for Money, money Will never pay the price for it that we have to Pay, pay? Everything is easy, baby ?It's a balancing act? Take from the poor, baby? And give to the rich Forget to forgive, baby It's a balancing act? To lose is to win, baby It's a telltale trap, don't Worry Worry And whoever came up with the idea for Money, money Will never pay the price for it that we have to Pay, pay Don't worry...
