Gig Review, The Comedy, Apr 2006
WHEN Jason Soudahs fans are becoming your friends, and his CDs are filling your shelves its time to ask: just why is his music so indispensable? Once dubbed as Tori Amos with facial hair crossed with Coldplay and Marc Cohn its not always that easy to place Mr Soudah. But as the gig finally kicks off, its time to shut up, order another drink and let the music answer the questions. Clad in minimalist white garb and sneakers Jason starts proceedings with a solo performance of Dive with me on piano. It goes down a treat; a sensitive, polite intro into the mind of the Soudah before kicking in with the rest of the band. And Breaking does just that as Matt Collins (drums) and Ian Graham (bass) back up his rippling piano efforts. Dealing with a subject as painful and awkward as finishing with someone, Jasons music with the words: Im tired of breaking, over it, over them, over that, over you sounds anything but tired and is instead down to earth, up beat and hopeful. Two songs later, after all this talk of heart break, Swim, offers a chilled, contented look at relationships actually going well. Un-clustered and sunny, were suddenly no longer in the pit of a London venue breathing in stale smoke but rather translated to expansive open plains (much like the beach on Jasons album cover!). Six Hours is a more urban number, perhaps his strongest song, tackling more tensions and passions with Marc Cohn-esque interludes from the piano and neat catchy lyrics. He sings: Six hours on the phone, why do we feel alone?; Jason doesnt do things in halves, even long distance relationship stuff, and his music implies this boldness and honesty. After Smile in a bottle and more thrilling piano riffage in Crushed Jason and band finish the evening off with Underneath and everyones happy. Flowing, positive with intelligent rhythms coming from drummer Matt, his finale causes him to stretch his voice once more to the max before leaving us till next time. So there we have it. No formulaic answers to his secret but whatever it is Jason Soudah and entourage dish it out by the plate load. Behold.

Gig Review, Rockwood NYC, 2006
Jason Soudah at Rockwood Music Hall
After hearing Jason perform at both Bar4 and Matchless, I was prepared for great things at Rockwood Music Hall, and I was not disappointed. Rockwood is perhaps the best music listening room in New York City, with flawless sound and a gorgeous grand piano. On one side a brick wall, on the other floor to ceiling windows. Being an audience member is always a very special experience.
On this particular evening, Jason's energy, excitement, and quirky personality immediately captured everyone's heart. As he started to play and sing, I was watching the reaction of those around me, and it was apparent that everyone in the room was enjoying his performance immensely. Perhaps Jason's greatest gift is his ability to craft melodies that persistently stick in your head. I can't count the number of times I've caught myself singing his songs. Joined to this melodic ability are a strong vocal presence and great skill at both piano and guitar.
But even if all that musical talent were to fall on deaf ears, by the end of his performance everyone loves Jason Soudah. Who can resist a man who pulls off a Jackson 5 cover on a grand piano in a foreign country? Think about it.
