I wrote my first song when I was about 8, and though it may not have been a hit single, it was a major stepping-stone in the growth of becoming a musical phenomenon. By age 11 I had become tired of writing to instrumentals and wanted my own original music. Coincidentally, that year I was given a keyboard for my birthday, and that's where it all really started to come together. I wanted lessons but my mother could not afford to provide them for me. I played day and night and eventually got to the point where I was making my own songs from front to back. Since then I have learned to play the drums,
guitar and bass..

in 2005 I was presented with a large distribution deal for an album I was working on called Life On Paper. In the end I initially broke the terms of the contract because it seemed to change when the album was complete. This eventually forced me to change my artist name from Shangrila to what is now D.T. Phenomenal. This skin that was shed to allow me to grow can still be viewed on my old soundclick page www.soundclick.com/shangrila
It was never my goal to obtain a recording contract, because I knew from my studies that an artist doesn't make what they should off the music they create. I didn't want to be a puppet on strings. I decided I was going to produce my own music and sell it myself. Since then I have been selling my music, cds and beats/instrumentals to other artists.
My goal is to be as big as possible in music doing it my way. If I was approached with a contract allowing me full control over my music and the final say, I more then likely would except it. For now I make enough off my music independently, I don't really need a record deal except for fame and promotion. Each artist needs to realize that there is an I in team and major accomplishments can be made independently, without bowing down to a record label.
