Dan grew up just outside St. Paul, MN, in a family immersed in music. Sunday nights were filled with musicals from the 1930s and 1940s, which were sung at the baby grand piano in the living room. When he was five years old Dan started taking piano lessons and at age seven he attended his first concert: John Denver at the St. Paul Civic Center. As a teenager, Dan saw Prince and U2 at the same venue.
Dan has been heavily influenced by the music of Bruce Springsteen, U2, The Replacements, and Bob Dylan. Dan’s connection to Springsteen was cemented as he was growing up. His mom is from New Jersey and the family would spend a couple weeks every summer on the “shore.” Nights on Long Beach Island, NJ, were filled with harmonicas, banjos, and traditional folk music on the deck listening to the waves crash. (In middle school, Dan was so taken by the Garden State that he started telling people he was from New Jersey – confusing his friends who only associated New Jersey with urban crime and industrial sprawl.)
