Thanks Crosseyed! Do I call you that or GP?
Oh You Kid! (Sing, Sing, Sing)
Hi Preston, couldn't resist after watching and hearing a Ginger Baker documentary. The Roland and Cubase are amazing. Happy Holidays!
Beware Mr. Baker? Saw it, great! Love that song lots, great piece of work Felice. Happy Holidays to you and yours, also.
Publisher Rex Bensen said my song Love Is Everything was being considered for the new Ringo Starr - then found out it had got there too late - they'd finished the album! OK waiting for that other door to open :)
Oh, man! That is crazy.
I have the feeling it will be an even bigger door!
Thanks Peter :)
Yeah that's crazy Adam - I was thinking it would be cool even if Ringo just heard the song but I don't think that happened.
Damn!
Hey Preston, thanks for cudos!!! It's like the old Elsie Bennett days:)
Exactly what I was thinking too.
Crazy about "Crazy About You" I can see this working as an R and B, Motown song too.
Hi Preston ! I guess you're right it would work as an R & B and Motown song too , thanks for your thought , thanks also for the 5 star rating , best , Marie.
Hi Marie, Thank you for your rating of my song Little One, so highly. It was written with the children of Sandy Hook elementary school in my heart. Nice to hear from you.
Hi Preston ! ... you're very welcome !... it's a beautiful song and the high rating is very well-deserved , nice to hear from you too , best , Marie.
"Love is Everything" is Fab!
Thanks for the comment Preston... just heard Little One - lovely tune. I liked your bio and the way-gone-osphere is of course the place to be if you want to go song hunting! NY must have been an amazing place to be back in the day. All the best! -Al
What can I say, I can say that I like your music!
Hi Bob, I noticed that your drummer is Pat Wehl, and I wonder if he is the very same Pat Wehl that was my drummer in "The Rubbles" back in the 60's?
Yes it is...:)
Your songs always inspire me! Forget Whitney on Don't Break my Heart Again, Shannon Marie is awesome.
Thanks Preston, would love to get this song to an agent and have it performed by a Mariah or Rihanna:)
Does anyone have any experience or insight into "soundandfilm.com". I have received an invite from them to pitch my music, but, and this is where I become a skeptic, there is an up front fee.
May you all enjoy the healthiest and happiest new year of your lives!
Thank you ! you too
I want to wish all my fellow artists a Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year filled with much Happiness and Success and Peace in the World.
Happy New Year to you too, Felice!
Thank you, all the best in 2013!
Thank you Felice! May the new year bring to you, everything your heart desires.
Thanks Preston, I wish you the same for the coming New Year!
Your music fills a place in my head that was made to fit. Big Like to you!
I really never click on the part that says "Artists you may know", but I know Brooklyn, having been born there, so I said to myself "self" click this and I was glad I did. I enjoyed your songs and playing ( it is you playing?) Anyway I will listen more in the future, Thanks!
Love these, stardust is beautiful!Yazzy
Felice, My heart belongs to your, great, new song, it "sends" me!
Thanks Preston, glad you enjoyed it. Frank Ralls did a great arrangement for me. Have a happy Memorial Day Weekend, Felice
Wife, Two Flute & Harpsichord was just the right thing for this gray, rainy day in NYC. Nice work.
Thanks Preston... I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Here is an interesting interview with Danny Elfman. He details his process scoring and shares some of his methods. Very fascinating. http://www.boingo.org/articles/EMFeb97.html 1
I agree, very interesting reading. Thanks for posting the link!
I drank this article like a milkshake, thanks.
Hey guys, I'm trying to find a good site for patches/samples that I can plug into Protools that sound very real and less synth. If you have any ideas. Shoot me a comment or email. It would be much appreciated. Thanks!
What kind of sounds are you looking for?
me too! something that isn't too expensive if that exists :-)
piano, strings, guitar for me :-)
An honest answer? Record it yourself... It sucks to hear but its the truth. Everytime I tried to replace a guitarist with a synth I always went back to the guitarist. Regarding Orchestration... I spent 1500 on East West sample collections and publishers still call me out on being sequenced. Just saying... You're competing against Hans Zimmer and stuff. May wanna get used to that. Not trying to bring you down... Just need to make sure you're aware that you're a part of the most cut throat business out there. You need players... Screw the samples.
That... Or a very talented sound designer.
Nina- EastWest is the best bang for the buck. Great samples and a very user friendly user interface. If money is no object, then I would strongly recommend Vienna Symphonic Library. If you're looking for jazz samples and horns in general, check out "Chis Heins Horns" Volumes 1-4. And after you have acquired these check out this article a friend of mine wrote: http://harmonycat.com/?p=174 1
p.s. I don't know what kind of PC you have but, MAC is the most stable. And be prepared to buy ram. Running rich sample environments requires a lot of Ram. If you have 2 PCs then you can make one a slave to your pro-tools sequencer and split the processing power. If you are not on a 64 bit(or higher) processing platform, it would be wise to upgrade if possible.
After Listening to a few of your tunes, I would say, Check out "Ministry Of Rock", and "Goliath" which are east west products too. Listen to the demos. Dig your "Cold Is" Song a lot. And @Protilius- Hans has not a new idea in 10 years. Just cues up every movie like Gladiator....I think he listened to too many sea shanties as a kid.
East West is DOPE.. Also Omnisphere is widely used by professionals in many styles of music for more synths and weird layers and crazy one shots, east west is more for real instrument sounds for orchestra. and then of course Native Instruments has a ton of really great plug ins. MAKE SURE YOU BUY RTAS PLUGINS FOR PROTOOLS> VST will not work.
MOTU's Symphonic is also very good
Lots of excellent advice from some very accomplished artists, highly respected with lots of experience, above, but... The OP, Nina, doesn't seem to be in the area of cinematic production. Without presuming to guess what her exact future application is, or Terese's, it seems to me that there is a place for samples and loops for a lot of artists. Nathaniel (Protillius) is dead on target right (record it yourself) for his application, but if you're not trying to score the next James Bond film, or Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean 17, there may be good reason to use loops or samples. For example; if you're recording an album to sell on Broadjam or CD Baby, or making a demo to pitch to a major artist, it's probably going to sound a lot better if you use drum loops from Beta Monkey (recorded by top level drummers recorded and engineered with big $ mics and equipment), and judiciously piece them together so the dynamics fit... probably going to sound a lot better than the drum part you're budgeted for, where your cousin Timmy who works at the paper clip factory and plays with his band at the bowling alley once a week can lay down.
Good point guys and RIY is great for expressive guitar and french horn playing but Nina specifically said shes looking for good plugins.. probably because shes already realized recording it yourself is really difficult and expensive and time consuming.. there are many very very good plugins out there that sound far better than the average recording engineer can record, costing far less money than the mics, amps, inst. and converters and artists time will all cost. The virtual instrument domain really has come a very long way since the 2000's and is great for a lot of the foundation of a track including drums, bass, piano, synth, and whatever extraneous sounds tickle your fancy. many very successful songs have been recorded in this way.
i.e. just discovered I had the Arturia CS80v plugin and the sound blew my mind.. You could indeed record this yourself, and it would be really fun, that is if you had 20k sitting around to spend on a real yamaha cs80.
...and Benjamin's comment: "Just cues up every movie like Gladiator....I think he listened to too many sea shanties as a kid." -- Clever sense of humor. That's pretty funny!
With all that said I am really looking forward to getting my Neve 1073 pres and some new mics this summer for some intense RIY sessions.
Hi Nina, I'm assuming you are asking about free downloads. In that case I would go to the IK Multimedia website and download the free version of Sampletank. A great tool that can be added to if you like, I've used it for years. You can probably hear demos there or on YouTube. See if you like it.
This is all fantastic guys! my interest was getting a decent sound for pitching on a very low budget. IK Multimedia sounds good. Robert, please email me your suggestions that would be great thanks! I use Sony Acid Music 8.0.
Thanks guys. I use protools but I don't know any string players so live would be tough.
Reason will cover everything electronic. A lot of great beats and awesome sounds in there. It cost between $300 and $500. It also includes some Mastering "Get me bys" if you can't afford a mastering engineer.
Another synth worth looking at is Absynth. Either programs should have demos posted on their respective websites and are very affordable.
Hey Nina, Terese, if you are a protools user, it should have the free xpand2 plugin. This plugin has (with some tweaking) acceptable sounds ( synth and orchestra) I used it on: Cue movie emotional, cue game sci fi, cue game war 1 and 2 (all demo's) then I switched to Project sam's Symphobia, wich is an awesome plugin for a step in price of 1200 dollars. I used it on: Someone's following me, A new life, Into the darkness, no return, No trace. the only thing is, I haven't got it running stable on protools 8.0.5. Am in converstation with Avid, NI and Project sam about it, to see what can be done (maybe protools 10 is the solution)
Top tens in classical, unique children's, psychedelic rock and now "rap" ?
Hi Preston, loved Dancing On The Moon! Fantastic chord progression with a haunting melody. Lot's of luck with this one!
Thank you so much Felice! Nice to hear from you.
OK, so how do I stop my foot from tapping after listening to L.A. Rag
Hey Preston, thanks for tapping and putting a smile on my face. That one was "a lulu" to record:) Glad you enjoyed it! All the best, Felice
Hi Preston, really enjoyed the two new song you put up, cudos!!! You have a flare for the dramatic, All the best, Felice

"Don't Break My Heart Again"----------------WHEW!!!
Hi Preston, So you likey "Don't Break My Heart Again"? I wrote this with Ms Whitney in mind and our mutual entertainment lawyer tried to get it to her when she was making a comeback. I think this piece would go over really well in Europe, don't you? Thanks for listening, Felice
I lotta likey, and I agree.
It's terrific Felice .. :D Absolutely loved it!! Virgina .. :)
Thanks Illi for taking the time to listen to my music, all the best, Felice
Hi Preston, listening to "Sweet Anna" and can understand why it's at the top of Classical. I love the dissonance that you created and the wonderful countrapuntal landscape that you have created between the instruments and melodies. Bravo!!! Felice
Coming from you, the comments are especially meaningful! Thanks!
I truly enjoyed the piece!!
Thank you so much for making "Sweet Anna" number one in Classical Contemporary!
