Johnny....Here are my thoughts on Runnin' From Your Love......Love the voice, great heart and truth in the performance of a very good song. The feel of this is incredible and I believe this is probably a song that was channeled by the writer. Vocal slightly reminds me of PF's Brain Damage at times. Guitar lead is tasteful and right on. My sense is the singer is also the guitar player or they are related. There are a couple of points where the vocal slides off the pitch and normally I would say correct this, but I think the feel and performance overshadows any pitch issue. (If you re-cut, address, otherwise you can leave it alone). Fantastic harmony singer as well. "Until I learn how to love myself, I'll be Runnin' From Your Love" is a strong, strong line and a big hook. Strong marriage of a melody and lyric...... I would change the line, "Watch you walk out the door" as this is not up to par with the rest of the song. There are a couple of phrases in the song that slight tweaking. Generally, they are the phrases that have been used so many times in other songs. When the first harmony comes in at 43 seconds, it seems the lead is struggling to stay on pitch. ....If I was producing, I would re-cut the rhythm track as it was recorded and mixed at very low volumes compared to the rest of the tracks. I would re-cut the singer solo, then add the harmony vocal and eliminating any pulling of the lead line. Note that it doesn't seem to be as much of an issue later in the song. I would ask the writer to re-examine every word and make sure it's unique and belongs. This is an incredible song and you don't want one or two phrases to weigh it down. I would love to see this guy live and I may just do that at some point as he is not too far from home. Please keep me posted on your progress. I will listen to your other stuff today......Great work! Roy

Hi Roy,

I can't tell you how much it means to hear your thoughts and suggestions... especially as busy a man as I could imagine you are. Thank you for the encouragement! To clear up on a couple of your thoughts, it was me personally that did all the lead vocals, playing and vocal harmony's (as you correctly assumed). I have very limited recording equipment and ability (Micro BR), and I feel that my potential resides in writing and performing... I struggle with the technical aspect despite being a chemical engineer by trade... but like a lot of people in this world, I strive to make the most of what I have with dedication to continuous improvement. If I ever get a gig in your area, I'll be sure to send you a quick note. Any open mics you recommend in WI? Thanks again, it means a lot to me that you took time out of your schedule to respond. I'm going to revisit this song with all that you so generously suggested. Kindest Regards, John

Hi Johnny. I took a listen to your song "Runnin' From Your Love". I'm not sure what you were looking to do with this song when you wrote it. I think it's something that would work well for TV/film that calls for that type of sad song. I know Nashville wouldn't be able to use it, they are looking for mostly mid to uptempo songs with a more positive message. But again, I think it would work for TV and or film. Nice job, Buc
