Lyrics
When I was young I used to gaze
across the ocean waves and think of future days
the little stones I threw didn't travel far
so I wished upon a star.
As years past by I built a boat
across those ocean waves I had vowed to float
although I was disowned and my mamma cried
I had to see the other side.
I pushed myself out from the shore
the self-same beach I'd dreamed on many years before
my sail filled with wind and craftily I veered
as I watched my homeland disappear.
The wind blew fierce the waves were high
the sky grew dark and I prayed that I wouldn't die
the lightening flashed around me and the thunder roared
but bent upon my purpose I gripped on to the oars.
For days and days the storm raged on
no food or water left and my sail was torn
all hope of living lost my spirit leaving me
by the grace of God I spotted...an island in the sea.
I dragged my boat up on the shore
much like the beach I'd dreamed on many years before
I kissed the ground and drank from emerald streams
then like a baby slept in the rain on the leaves.
As years past by I built a home
such inner peace and joy I had never known
yet still at night at times I lay awake in fear
and hear...the distant thunder warning...
another storm is near.
