Hero

Story Behind The Song

As I left the shelter of my parent's home and moved into adulthood, I started to see how easy my life had been up to that point. I became aware that there were a whole lot of people dealing with problems and living conditions that would terrify me. I started paying close attention to the ones who had learned to take those difficulties in stride. They still amaze me!

Lyrics

She lost two of her front teeth two boyfriends ago.
She's raising the baby daughter of her seventeen-year-old.
Her latest live-in quit his job, said the bossman was a jerk,
so she's working double shifts at the Circle K Â?cause somebody's got to work.
If you catch her on her day off, she'll clean your house for cash.
But nobody sees a hero, just worn out trailer trash.

He's got a monthly mortgage that would feed half of Peru.
Got an office at work and one at home Â?cause there's always work to do.
He knows he better close on every deal that he can grab,
Â?cause his wife's plastic surgeon is running him a tab.
And every minute, every day his back's against the wall,
but nobody sees a hero, just a guy who's got it all.

She's got three kids in middle school and they're giving her a time.
Her husband's always on the road, Â?cause he reps a dozen lines.
Her mother's in a nursing home, and her in-laws are out there too.
If she's not there by four they call her, asking "where are you?".
And she's always kind to all these people chewing up her life,
but nobody sees a hero, just another salesman's wife.

He's managed this here grocery store, be thirty years this May.
Lived alone since high school, it just worked out that way.
But the lady at the Circle K just kicked out her old man,
so he's headin' on down to the trailer park in his Ford Conversion Van.
Gonna take her and her grandchild to the fish camp Friday night.
But nobody sees a hero, just a good guy gettin' it right.
Gettin' it right.
