Museums

Story Behind The Song

It really just started as a defense of Los Angeles, kind of inspired when every city on the map loves to chant "Beat L.A." at a sporting event for no apparent reason. I've been sick of East Coast knuckleheads trying to slam L.A. with the knee-jerk comments that LA has no culture. I just try to point out that most everybody I've ever met on the East Coast doesn't exactly go to museums every day. So that's the genesis of it, then here it's told as the long-distance girlfriend the singer is somehow using East Coast "culture" as a convenient excuse.

Song Description

It's a cultural defense of Los Angeles. At the same time, it's an appeal from the singer to the girl to come clean with her REAL reason for not wanting to move to him in Los Angeles. Plus, it punctures the paper tiger East Coast argument that L.A. has no "culture"

Lyrics

You think the East is intellectual
While Hollywood is so disposable
I'm not saying you're wrong - even if you belong
Every night there's something going on

Don't tell me you'll miss the museums
Really how often did you see them
We've got them here in LA, they're really good by the way
Don't tell me you'll miss the museums

I think you're scared to come and live with me
And in the air there's no humility
I think that's kind of true - it's always 72
Through the year the sky indulges you

(chorus)
You go on how you miss the museums
Restaurants you can't get a seat in
We've got them here in LA, they're really good by the way
Don't tell me you'll miss the museums

You love to say the symphony's a joke
And the opera company's gone broke
You say you're getting bored, you don't read anymore
How much really did you read - before?

(chorus)
I know you could still have your reasons
Might be true that you'll miss the seasons
Don't have them here in LA, it might be better your way
But don't tell me you miss the museums
