The Flight to Varennes

Story Behind The Song

The French Revolution is one of the most dramatic events in all of human history, and some great imagery can be drawn from it for the purpose of writing songs about the many themes one faces in life.

Song Description

This song is a reference to French Revolution history, where Louis XVI is taken prisoner by his own people and taken from Varennes (the city where he was caught) back to Paris. This song talks about how it doesn't matter how much pride you have in the person you have made yourself to be because you will soon face judgment by other people or something far greater and more fearsome.

Lyrics

The Flight to Varennes

Wait a minute, Judge, I call myself to the stand, I really feel before you is an innocent man
Can't you see? No one's cleaner than me
Well I never came to terms with the hearts that you broke, I've fallen out of key on almost every note
I don't think I've ever taken to heart a word that you spoke

Well I never thought I'd find myself standing before you again
I tried to write you a love song, but you dried up my pen
And I didn't think you'd fix what was a failed attempt at love from the start
I tried to write you a love song, but you hardened my heart

Well before this I was royalty, there wasn't really anyone or anything that I need
And no one's higher than me
In these revolutionaries I had lost all my faith, the city I once loved they turned to a cage
That I was in, so I fled to Varennes

Well I never thought I'd find myself standing before you again
I tried to write you a love song, but you dried up my pen
And I didn't think you'd fix what was a failed attempt at love from the start
I tried to write you a love song, but you hardened my heart

Well I never thought I'd find myself standing before you again
I tried to write you a love song, but you dried up my pen
And I didn't think you'd fix what was a failed attempt at love from the start
I tried to write you a love song, but you hardened my heart

Well I never thought that I would have to pay for all of my sins,
But I couldn't hide them on the flight to Varennes
