Story Behind The Song
This song was written a couple of days after my Mother called to tell me she had decided to sell the farm of 40 acres, my Father's dream. He had passed away 1 1/2 years earlier, and she had just suffered 2 strokes. It was time for major decisions and changes, ones which were difficult and very emotional, thus the inspiration for this song.
Song Description
Song about the cycles of life, that even though people we love age and pass on, they live on through their children.

Lyrics
DADDY BOUGHT HIS DREAM OF 40 ACRES, CARVED OUT HIS PIECE OF PARADISE
IT TOOK 20 LONG, HARD YEARS OF LABOR TO GET IT LIKE HE LIKED, THEN HE DIED
MAMA SWORE SHE’D KEEP IT GOING, BUT LAST NIGHT I HAD TO SAY
THAT PLACE IS JUST TOO MUCH TO HANDLE FOR A WOMAN HALF YOUR AGE
AND THAT’S OKAY
1st CHORUS
LIFE GOES ON, EVEN WHEN A DREAM IS GONE
THIS OLD BALL OF CLAY WE’RE RIDING ON KEEPS TURNING
LIFE GOES ON
YESTERDAY IT WAS SUMMER, I WAS PLAYING KICK THE CAN
I BLINKED MY EYES, 20 YEARS WENT BY, I DON’T UNDERSTAND, BUT HERE I AM
THE ONLY THING THAT NEVER CHANGES IS THAT EVERYTHING MUST CHANGE
DADDY’S GONE, MOM’S ALONE, LEANING ON THE BABIES THAT SHE RAISED
MORE AND MORE THESE DAYS
2nd CHORUS
LIFE GOES ON, IT DON’T LAST THAT LONG
THIS OLD BALL OF CLAY WE’RE RIDING ON KEEPS TURNING
LIFE GOES ON
(BRIDGE)
THEY SAY NO ONE LIVES FOREVER, BUT I SOMETIMES THEY DO
MY BABY’S GOT MY DADDY’S SMILE AND MY MAMA’S EYES OF BLUE, AND HER SPIRIT TOO
3rd CHORUS
LIFE GOES ON, IT KEEPS GROWING STRONG
THIS OLD BALL OF CLAY WE’RE RIDING ON KEEPS TURNING
LIFE GOES ON
