WHEN A YOUNG ONE STARES

Story Behind The Song

Having children and raising my little brother made me reflect on my life and how I noticed actions of the elders around me. I wanted to be like them. Good and bad. I noticed my actions being mimicked by those who look up to me. The good and the bad. My brother has many of my ways. I am more conscious now so I really try to limit certain actions around my children.

Song Description

Young people are like sponges. They absorb everything. Especially the things that the elders do. They really deeply take in the actions of those that they look up to. So beware of who's watching and your actions.

Lyrics

(Intro talk)
A yo...this is TaBoo. I just wanna make y'all aware that...when you see that young person staring at you...that he's taking it all in. Watching your every move. So be careful what you do. Listen.

V1
A younger set of eyes
Is always watching, trying to see how
He could recreate your steps
To make it his style
Everybody starts blind in this colorful world
Not understanding what we're seeing in this big bad world
But when it's close and it's repetitious
We tend to take it deep
Questioning his peers shedding tears deep in his sleep
The younger brother of another fool in the hood
Used to be good but dropped his books to study the hood
He didn't know that.
His brother shed a tear, watching him get blown back
His eyes rolled back. As he stared
Now his little brother scared
Couldn't sleep that night
Haunted by the nightmares
You don't apologize but try to justify
Saying that the scene he seen was for grown up eyes
He still taking it in, watching big bro sin
You thought it's funny, watching his eyes
Tasting the gin
Hanging out while you're mackin' honeys
And then smackin' honeys. Getting the concept
Of treating women like their dummies
You better change this game of causing growing pains
Before his soul go grimmey and he can't be changed.

Hook
You're not a role model
But a model playing a role for that someone
A blessing or misdirection for that young one
Unaware that you're compared
To his own life, when a young one stares.
(2x)

You're not a role model (4x)

V2
Green rope around my neck
Attached was two keys
Took my time getting in
No one was waiting for me
Pops bounced in my infant stage
Moms worked hard
Which left a lonely kid
Crying trying to hide his scars
Step moms don't wanna bond
Father left the state
Mother looking to replace
Found no good dates
Became a child in my uncle's shadow
Watching his moves. Drug and alcohol abuse
I was right there too
His crew was dirty. Sometimes they had to use their tools
I wanted to use one too
But they just refused by saying
Stick to the books 'cause this life ain't living'
And for the big mistakes this life is not forgiving
That phrase. Stuck in my head through the hardest of days
Fueled my conscious enough to take temptation away
It's ironic smoke of the chronic right in my face
But let it pass me up despite my craving to taste
Cooking fish at 15. $100 dollars per check
Seeing my peers hustle getting money stacks to their necks
I sit and think. What if I would have followed that rule
Of that I had to be like my peers, and do what they do
Could you image Mr. Clayton siting locked in a box
Could have been if I had no phrase to tell me to stop
If you can't help the negative at least be aware
Of the actions that you make when a young one stares

Hook
You're not a role model
But a model playing a role for that someone
A blessing or misdirection for that young one
Unaware that you're compared
To his own life, when a young one stares.
