Subway Man

Story Behind The Song

I stopped to listen to a homeless man play his horn one day on the 42nd street train platform. His saxophone case was open for passer bys to throw some loose change in if they were so inclined. Most stopped to listen and were enthralled by his sound. I stayed and listened. He could really play his horn.

Lyrics

Oh subway man playin' your horn and you're filled with such elation
Oh subway man we're listenin' to the sounds that you're creatin'
Cause we know how much you love it down there in the station
Cause we know how much you love it down there in your station

Oh subway man playing your horn and you're filled with such elation
Oh subway man we're listening to the sounds that you're creatin'
We all know how much you love it down there in your station
We all know how much you love it down there in your station.

People talkin' and walkin' around stop just to hear your sweet sounds
People talkin' and walkin' around stop just to hear your sweet sounds
Light up the night play it blue play it bright
All for the people's delight
Light up the night play it blue play it bright
All for the people's delight
Then you sit up straight feel the coins in your case
You hear the people leave and they pick up their pace...hey
It's the city. New York City.

Oh subway man here comes another man with a horn tucked under his arm
Another nickel another dime
Does he alarm you...don't let him disarm you.
Oh subway man hear the old blind man and his saxophone
Oh subway man he's playin' soulful music from way down home
Oh subway man don't let him blow your mind
With his horn he's so inclined
He aint really blind
He aint really blind
He aint really blind...

He aint really blind
He aint really blind
He aint really blind
He aint really blind

He aint really blind
Another nickel 'nother dime
He aint really blind
Another nickel 'nother dime

He aint really blind
He aint really blind
He aint really blind
He aint really blind
He aint really blind
He aint really blind
Blinded to the light...
