Story Behind The Song
I spent years living in N Y C
with the street scene described above indellibly etched in my mind. I remember thinking to myself "that could have been me on the street or in that bus.
Song Description
Many long haired, unshaven homeless people dressed in rags, could be seen sitting along side of many N Y C streets back in the seventies. Busses drove by filled with prisoners who clawed at the metal grated windows and screamed out at anyone they passed.

Lyrics
Moses sittin' by the side of the road
Waitin' for the second coming of his soul
Animals screamin' from inside a prison bus
And everybody knows
It could've been us
Everybody knows it could've been us
Everybody knows it could've been us
Oh I went to the corner to see what I could see
At least a hundred people were ahead of me
I ran back to my space in my place in my time
Cause I didn't want to be at the end of the line
No I didn't want to be at the end of the line
Oh Moses sittin' by the side of the road
Waitin' for the second coming of his soul
Animals screaming from inside a prison bus
And everybody knows it could've been us
Everybody knows it could've been us
Everybody knows it could've been us
Oh hunted, cornered, driven to the river's edge
Battered, beaten, face to face with the end
Backwards, forwards, sideways All around
If we're dying why don't we go down?
Oh Moses sittin' by the side of the road
Waitin' for the second coming of his soul
Animals screaming from inside a prison bus
Everybody knows it could've been us
Everybody knows it could of been us
Everybody knows it could've been us
Oh I went to the mountain to see what I could see
No one had gotten there ahead of me
I warmed to the mountain
At last I found a home
I was first on line and I was all alone
I was first on line but I was all alone
Oh Moses sittin' by the side of the road
Waitin' for the second coming of his soul
Animals from inside a prison bus
Everybody knows it could've been us
Everybody knows it could've been us
Everybody knows
It could've been us
It could've been us
Oh it could've been us
It could've been us
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
Everybody knows
Everybody knows knows knows
Everybody knows knows knows
Everybody knows knows knows
Everybody knows knows knows
It could've been us
It could've been us
