Story Behind The Song
At the close of Act 1, Tinker begins to believe what everyone has been telling him; that because he is clearly dying, Anna will be wooed by better men. He does not realize that the man he sees out his cell window in the far distance is actually the lecherous Metsys, not wooing, but assaulting Anna. He turns away from his window just before Anna mortally wounds Metsys in self defense, with a knife from the cart. Anna goes into hiding, confirming in Tinker’s mind that she has indeed deserted him.

Lyrics
Outside my walls in a distant square
I can almost see the cart,
and my Anna there
Here in my cell, I fight my jealousy
As some other man appears
And woos her away from me,
And it pierces the heart…
His robes are rich,
she seems to recognize
Perhaps she’s waited for this moment
away from other eyes
His hands caress each battered ware
as he plans his words of love,
oh, how I wish I were there,
And it pierces the heart!
Around the cart in a circle dance
She coyly keeps them apart;
he’ll press his chance
She’ll try to resist
sweet things he’s said
But he’ll insist she take his terms,
oh, how I wish I were dead!
And it pierces the heart!
Now he’ll prob’ly confess
all this was planned
Perhaps he reaches out;
she takes his hand!
And I can look no more;
she’s not that strong
For I know he’ll finally get
what he’s asked for all along!
And it pierces the heart!
How it pierces the heart!
