What a refreshing change to hear a cello-piano combination. Appears to be a sort of theme and variations. The wide range of articulations, bowing (and pizz.) as well as the other changes make for interesting listening.
The presence and balance of instruments in recording was excellent. Clean recording, and tight ensemble.
Skillful use of dynamic range.
Some captivating highlights:
2:49 the rhythmic gesture in the cello that closes the variation. Similar at 3:40, plus the higher pitch this time does it one better. The ending, where the two instruments trade roles with this same figure (cello winding down the tension) really works.
The spacing in pitch range where the piano plays above and below - leaving the open space in the middle for the cello to sound.
The unexpected shift in meter, which elongates the line. Startling at first, then attractive.
