On The Hill

From his couch on the hill to the lighthouse on the shore,
The man would watch the tide roll in and skirt across the sandy shore.
The man retired here last year from Northwestern Mutual Life,
His IRA and severance pay would keep him safe, secure for life.

From the beach down on the sand, two young lovers, both 19.
Saw the condo on the hill, saw the man but were not seen.
"Who is He?" she said aloud. "he must be rich to live that way."
The boy replied, "Nah, he ain't that rich or else he would live far away."

He happened to be home that June when those young lovers saw him there.
He didn't see them as I mentioned,
He just took in the salty air.
The couple were still by the ocean when the boy said, "Let's go see what it looks like inside his condo."
"Sure," said she.

So they got up off their blankets, shook off the sand, put them away.
Started to walk up toward the hillside about a half a mile away.
The man looked down from his condo, saw the boy and girl there walking.
"They look nice, I hope they're happy."
He walked inside and turned away.

Top of the hill, they caught their breath from the long and ragged climb,
The man was inside watching TV, settled back with a glass of wine.
A passing cloud blocked out the sun, the boy then pointed to the dock.
The man got up to change the channel, turned down the volume and heard a knock.

The couple stood outside the door, the man said to them, "Who is there?"
"We want to come and see your condo,"
The man said, "just wait right there."
He wasn't sure that he could trust them, the girl looked at the boy and shrugged.
The man opened up the door a little, the boy then said, "hey, open up.:

The man closed the door for a moment, then he opened up the door.
The couple walked in, they were speechless,
It was all they thought and more.
The man said, "Visit for a moment, I am living by myself."
The girl said, "So''s my grandma, not much fun living by yourself."

The man paused for a moment, then said, "We are alone here at the end."
"We are alone, just the way things work out, enjoy yourself while you are kids."
The couple walked out on the dock, looked down at the beach where they used to sit.
The girl said, "Hey, look at the seagulls,"
The boy said,"Yeah, look at the shit."

They were there for half an hour when the man said, " I should go
Back to watch my TV programs, Survivor's on tonight, you know."
The couple said, "Thanks for the visit, thanks for the view from the other side."
Then the man closed the door behind them...
