Story Behind The Song
I wrote this song in 1984, while in the Air Force, when I noticed the extent to which the lives of my co-workers and me orbited around the availability of coffee. The song lay dormant for many years, until in 2002 I began production on this recording.

Lyrics
The tonic drips into my brain
It's jarring me awake again
It props the lids of swollen eyes
The jagged edge of dull surprise
The morning comes, I need a cup
To clear my head and lift me up
Then once again, the afternoon
I bend my wrist and turn a spoon
The creeping ooze into the flow
And soon the tubes begin to glow
Beyond the crest begins the dim
Another shot, awake again
I sit and watch the morning drip
The daily grind from which I sip
We sit and wait expectantly
For glass to fill and set us free
And every day a little more
The jolt I need to clear the floor
It's not a drug, I'm telling you
It's just a thing I have to do
No substitute, no other form
I need it bitter, dark and warm
The sacred caff, my constant friend
It's keeping me awake again
