Stubborn Heart

Story Behind The Song

Ralph Murphy said to write about songs for women at their worst time of the day possible. If you can make them feel good, then you're well on your way. This is the first song I started thinking about writing for women. What woman hasn't been in a relationship and felt she was going to stand her ground, no matter what? Self-respect, I feel, is a powerful feeling, and I hope I captured that feeling here. I thought it should be set to a pop-rock feel.

Lyrics

[Verse]

Every fight ends up the same
We always slip into a game
We wait and wait it out 'til the other one gives in
But I won't lose
I won't let you win
I'll be patient but I won't be a victim

[Pre-Chorus]

You won't bring me down
I won't let you bring me down
You won't ever wear the crown
'Cause...

[Chorus]

Look at my face, I won't flinch
You won't even see a flicker or wince
Though I wish the frozen air would just burn
On down, on down
Though it hurts,
My stubborn heart is staying firm

[Verse]

So maybe we might sink
Or maybe we might fall
Or maybe our little game will be the ending to it all
Make your move
I won't let you win
I'll be patient but I'm not, I'm not caving in

[Pre-Chorus]

You won't bring me down
I won't let you bring me down
You won't ever wear the crown
'Cause...

[Chorus]

Look at my face, I won't flinch
You won't even see a flicker or wince
Though I wish the frozen air would just burn
On down, on down
Though it hurts,
My stubborn heart is staying firm

[Bridge]

It feels so cold without your touch
But I'll storm through it
Even if that means,
Giving up on us
'Cause...

[Chorus]

Look at my face, I won't flinch
You won't even see a flicker or wince
Though I wish the frozen air would just burn
On down, on down
Though it hurts,
Mmmm....

[Chorus]

Look at my face, I won't flinch
You won't even see a flicker or wince
Though I wish the frozen air would just burn
On down, on down
Though it hurts,
My stubborn heart is staying, staying firm

[Outro]

La, la, la...
My stubborn heart is staying firm

Some very nice parts in this song, especially the guitars in the intro. Vocal has very nice sound at the lower register.

Chorus is catchy and infectious.
