Story Behind The Song
I was drafted into the army in 1966 and was terrified I'd get sent to Vietnam. Almost every night I'd put on a stack of records to go to sleep to, and almost always included a record from Joan Baez, Judy Collins, and Buffy Sainte-Marie). I would get absorbed in their music - almost as if they were physically present - and it brought me to a place far away from the military world I was living in. I impetus for writing the song came after watching the Joan Baez I Am A Noise documentary

Lyrics
Judy Joan and Buffy
The buds were ripe and ready to bloom
The world was filled with songs
My song was just beginning
I didn't know what road I'd be on
Then one day I heard a song
Of darkness and of death
It kept on getting louder
Till it drowned out all the rest
The river Styx was calling
I was tryin' to hold on tight
When in the distance I heard some voices
Singin of hope and light
I hung on to those voices
A life raft in a storm
And every night they sang to me
And brought me back to shore
Judy Joan and Buffy
Gilead's troubadours
Singing love - the love filled up my soul
Judy Joan and Buffy
Gilead's troubadours
Singing strength - the strength and love that made me whole
I don't know where I'd be today
Without those troubadours
Who came and sang to me each night
And brought me back to shore
They bathed me with a timeless love
A love that filled the air
A balm that healed my troubled soul
And wiped away my fears
Judy Joan and Buffy
Gilead's troubadours
Singing love - the love filled up my soul
Judy Joan and Buffy
Gilead's troubadours
Singing strength - the strength and love that made me whole
