Free Puppy

Story Behind The Song

Lyrics

(Verse 1)
Free puppy said a sign on the back of a truck
In the Wal-Mart parking lot
So I whipped right in and I picked her up
But then I started having second thoughts
But my little girls eyes were as big as moon pies
So I knew I had to take it home
But I could've died when I went inside
For a collar and a rawhide bone

(Verse 2)
I pushed the cart down the isle for what seemed like a mile
And when I finally reached the checkout line
I had a collar, a leash and some kind of shampoo
That's supposed to make her fur coat shine
An igloo doghouse, a squeaky toy mouse
A brush and some milk bones too
A fify pound bag of puppy chow
And the total came to two-eighty-two

(Chorus)
Free puppy, free puppy
Well now I wish I would've got a pet rock
And I swear I'll take her down to the city pound
If she carries off one more sock
Free puppy, free puppy
The biggest oxymoron ever known
Now she's big as an ox, and I'm the moron
That brought the free puppy home

(Verse 3)
Well it ain't over yet, no we went to the vet
For a check-up and to get a few shots
She had heartworms and hookworms and some kind of mites
'Bout everything but chicken pox
He asked "Do you want her spayed" I said no, not today
Just let me see the bottom line
With the shots and the drugs and all those vitamins
The total came to three-ninety-nine

(Repeat chorus)

(Verse 4)
Well it's been 'bout a year since we brought her in here
And the puppy is a big ol' hound
The carpet is ruined, the sofa's been chewed
And she's pulled half the curtains down
Well I probably sound bitter 'cause she just dropped a litter
She's about to drive me out of my mind
But misery loves company, so I'm makin' up my own little sign
