Story Behind The Song

Having been through plenty of trauma early in my life, I have learned lessons, at a young age, that many people don't learn until late in life. I wrote this song when I was at a place in my life where I was dating a man who was 11 years older than me, and it became clear that he had not learned many of the life lessons I had learned years before and already healed from, so we weren't a good match. At the same time, I noticed many of my friends were drinking excessively and doing drugs to avoid their feelings and their problems, while I was reading self-help books and in therapy and facing my problems to grow and heal (hence the lyric, "while they numb, you self-soothe"). Figuring most people will eventually face their problems, I reminded myself that life can be like a game of hide and go seek, and that I merely needed to count slow while they all run and hide from their problems, but they'll need me on the other side.
