Story Behind The Song
Song was inspired by the collapse of the Bridge in Vermont in the aftermath of the flooding caused by Hurricane Irene in 2011.
A video clip was shown on the news of the moments as the bridge collapsed and the reaction from the people who were there at the time. One of the striking things about the image was how the bridge appeared to lift up before it collapsed as though acknowledging the people who were there - a kind of goodbye.
Song Description
The song is written from the point of view of the bridge recounting its history and awareness that there is someone there to say goodbye. But it is written as lovesong, a heartbreak and sad farewell

Lyrics
See the storm clouds over Bartonsville
Feel the water spill
You've come to let me go
And watch the river flow
Over me
I've stood for all these years
I've held the weight of men and carried all their fears
And all the secrets that I could tell
You threw your coins from me like a wishing well
And even though
You cry for me
You can't hold me
And even though I hold my head up high
It breaks my heart
And even though you carved your name deep inside me
Your heavy eyes are watching me
Fall apart
As I turn and fall away
I see fishing lines and diving games
And the poster-remains of the circus days
Fade away
You've left me for dead
I lie bruised and broken on the river bed
Someone will love me and my history
And rescue me piece by piece
And even though
You cry for me
You can't hold me
And even though I hold my head up high
It breaks my heart
And even though you carved your name deep inside me
Your heavy eyes are watching me
Fall apart
And even though
You cry for me
You can't hold me
And even though I hold my head up high
It breaks my heart
And even though you carved your name deep inside me
Your heavy eyes are watching me
Fall apart
