I wrote and began performing this tribute to my daughter Shawn-Michelle in 1979 when she was seven years old. Then when I started doing live performances again in 2003 (in great part due to her encouragement) I added the last two verses to bring it up to

MORNIN' LIGHT
Writer: Jerry Lee Surber Copyright 2003
WHEN I WOKE UP THIS MORNIN'
I SAW THE SUN SHININ' 'CROSS HER ROOM
SHE WAS LYIN' THERE SLEEPIN'
AND I KNEW THAT SHE WAS DREAMIN'
I COULD SEE HER GROWIN' UP TO SOON
HER LONG BLONDE HAIR BESIDE HER
ON THAT PILLOW WHERE SHE LAY
AND THE THOUGHTS THAT DANCED INSIDE HER HEAD
I KNOW WILL SOON BE GONE
WHEN SHE AWAKES
THEN CAME THE MORNIN' LIGHT...THE MORNIN' LIGHT
STREAMIN' THROUGH THE WINDOW
AS THE SUN WAS SLOWLY RISIN'
I COULD SEE HER THERE...WHILE SHE WAS SLEEPN' SO FAIR
FROM OTHER WORLDS-A-DREAMIN'
SHE SLOWLY RETURNED...JUST AS THE MORNIN' LIGHT
THE MORNIN' LIGHT...SWEPT ACROSS HER FACE
AND HER BLUE EYES OPENED
HOW THEY SHOWN SO BRIGHT...SO CLEAR AND SO BRIGHT
ANOTHER DAY TO BE...ANOTHER DAY TO SEE
THAT MORNIN' LIGHT
NOW SHE'S ALL GROWN UP...AND LIVIN' ON HER OWN
I'M PROUDER OF HER EACH AND EVERY DAY
SHE CALLS ME FROM WORK OR HOME
SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK
I LOVE TO HEAR EACH AND EVERY WORD
THAT SHE HAS TO SAY
BLONDE HAIR...BLUE EYES...IS STILL WHAT SHE'S ALL ABOUT
AND I RECALL THE DAY SHE WAS BORN
LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY
MANY YEARS HAVE COME AND GONE
AND I'M SO PROUD...TO BE HER DAD
BUT WHEN SHE MAKES HER MIND UP
YOU BEST GET OUT OF HER WAY
THEN CAME THE MORNIN' LIGHT...THE MORNIN' LIGHT
STREAMIN' THROUGH THE WINDOW
AS THE SUN WAS SLOWLY RISIN'
I COULD SEE HER THERE...WHILE SHE WAS SLEEPIN' SO FAIR
FROM OTHER WORLDS-A-DREAMIN'
SHE SLOWLY RETURNED...JUST AS THE MORNIN' LIGHT
THE MORNIN' LIGHT...SWEPT ACROSS HER FACE
AND HER BLUE EYES OPENED
HOW THEY SHOWN SO BRIGHT...SO CLEAR AND SO BRIGHT
ANOTHER DAY TO BE...ANOTHER DAY TO SEE
THAT MORNIN' LIGHT
