Lyrics

The Wind is a Wicked Whistler
©Jeffrey C. Ashbaker 10/2014

She was a good girl and she always called her mother
Her father was a drifter; all he left her was his name
And she kept talking 'bout the sister and the brother
How no one ever loved them, no one cared what they became
But I could hear her when she talked all through the night
To the imaginary people in her life

Me and my friends, we used to play down by the river
Where the nighttime comes so quickly and the darkness never ends
I watched her dance there, in the moonlight, no one with her
Calling out to something, then she'd answer back again
She was an iridescent figure in the dark
But when she smiled at me, her sorrow pierced my heart

---Chorus # 1---
Oh, the wind is a wicked whistler
Still somehow, I've heard it all
Some folks swear, I pushed my sister
Off the falls
---------------------------------
It's been a long time since I played down by the water
But even now I think I see her, in my dream, she re-occurs
Some might say, she's the spitting image of my daughter
And if you ask me for the truth, well, I can't tell you that for sure
But if you met her, you would know without a doubt
My little sister never figured it all out

I might wander by the riverbank this evening
Leave a little flower by the place where she was found
I'll always wonder, was she just make believing
But I couldn't stop her jumping and the water took her down
It occurs to me; I never had a chance
I was intruding on the climax of her dance

---Chorus # 2--- x2
Oh, the wind is a wicked whistler
Still somehow, I hear her call
The willows weep, the waters whisper
(As we fall) To us all

It tells a good story. The fiddle arrangement is good.

Great memorable melody and song progression. I love the sound on the bass guitar, moves so sweetly. Once again dark lyrical content and a great vocal performance. Excellent recording as well. Almost country but not quite just a hit though. Pretty sure I know who this is as the sound is unmistakable. As always very well done.

NICE CLEAR VOICE, GOOD STORY SONG

Nice traditional folk song.

Good vocals and lyrics and really nice fiddle.

Good harmonies.

What a sad story...but you folks have a great partnership... duets can be tricky but you have it together...your vocals, harmony, back ground guitar combine to make this song a really great listen. I was happy for the ride thanks.

Very interesting story, this song has to tell. It makes for lovely, magical lyrics with etherial description of childhood, the little etherial sister and her cause of death. She drowned, and the brother could not save her. The male voice is smooth and slightly craggy, the female voice in the background of the duet is very pretty. It is an easy, poetic song with a pleasant and soothing melody that fits the lyrics to perfection. A lovely song.
