Story Behind The Song
The picture of an old man lying in bed thinking about his world to come came to me while walking the dogs on a cold winter night in Minneapolis in early 1982. The notion of a monologue in song came to me and I went home and wrote the song in about an hour. the next morning, my mother called to tell me my 89 year old grandfather had fallen and broken his hip that evening, and he gave it up and died later that day. He had been a popular church singer and pianist most of hi long life, and so the song is for him.
Song Description
"Any Day" is a 'bluegrass gospel' tune and derives its melody and feel from traditional bluegrass and old church hymns you have heard in Appalachia in the Depression era. I would cite the Carter Family, the Louvin Brothers as older influences and Gram Parsons and Rick Skaggs among newer influences.

Lyrics
This is the story
Of a dying old man
My life is behind me
My time is at hand
I know that my Savior
Has brought me this way
To honor His Glory
On the Judgment Day
The angels are coming
To take me away
Any day, any day, any day
For Holy Redemption
I hope and I pray
Any day, any day, Lord, any day
For many a year
I wandered and strayed
I wasted my nights
And squandered my days
For the sins of the past
I repent and I pay
I pray for His mercy
And follow the way
Repeat chorus
Bridge:
Now that I've reached
The end of my life
I've learned a few things
Please heed this advice:
Follow the Gospel
Know wrong from the right
Shun all temptation
And walk in the Light
Repeat chorus
