There're some new folks squattin' down the road.
I think they've got some fuel and guns.
We'll wait 'til just a little after dark.
That's when we'll make our run.
We keep a watch on the fire.
We got a guard on the still.
The forge is pounding day and night,
We got no time to kill.
The first snow of the season
Makes everything look real clean.
The kids are all excited;
They don't know we're almost out of kerosene.
Some times I think to stop and wonder,
Did anybody win the war?
Since you've been gone,
There's just not much that seems to matter anymore.
We ain't got no X-box, no DVD,
There's no Net and no cell phone.
We got no school and no doctor, yet.
There's no satellite, and no dial tone.
What with the the earthquakes, the dirty bombs,
The chicken flu, the government, and flooding on the coast,
We've been on the move just about four years.
Still, I guess we're luckier than most.
I ask each traveler come passing through,
Would he carry my letters to you?
I've tried to touch you every other way,
Seems like nothings getting through.
Some times I think to stop and wonder,
Did anybody win the war?
But since you've been gone,
There's just not much that seems to matter anymore.
