Story Behind The Song
Prophet or Lunatic was written about someone I've known for almost 20 years. This man was the first person to introduce me to quantum mechanics, to Bob Marley and to the joys of chantrelle mushrooms. He is a man who does not live in the same reality as the rest of us--so who is to say if he's a genius who understands more than the rest of us--or if he is just completely off his rocker?
Song Description
Galileo was a genius, but they thought he was crazy. How do you know?

Lyrics
Prophet or Lunatic
© 2006 Devra Wolf
You understand mushrooms and wizards and redwoods
But not picket fences or manicured lawns
And you search for your demons and seek to subdue them
A dervish you dance til you fall to the ground
And you live in a world that is of your own making
A crumbling castle and prickly crown
And you sweep away fairy dust sent by your mother
Howl in the moonlight and sleep with the dawn
Prophet or lunatic, who can say?
Not sure it matters anyway
But angels watch over children and fools
I figure there?s an angel or two
Watching over you
You studied philosophy in Julliard Park
At three in the morning with lonely old drunks
Sharing bottles of whiskey in brown paper bags
And hiding in bushes when night watchmen passed
And you learned about politics in old Jackson Square
Where a newspaper pillow and an old sleeping bag
Were the home of a wise man who warned of corruption
And you bought him dinner and then shook his hand
Prophet or lunatic, who can say?
Not sure it matters anyway
But angels watch over children and fools
I figure there?s an angel or two
Watching over you
You revel in loneliness
Loving the pain
Of a world only you understand
You married five women and learned about love
In forests and cities and faraway lands
Madness is tempting but so hard to live with
So you?ll go on searching as long as you can
Prophet or lunatic, who can say?
Not sure it matters anyway
But angels watch over children and fools
I figure there?s an angel or two
Watching over you
