Lyrics
Before they closed the old bar down good bands used to play
on a two foot riser they covered with a rug and used for a stage.
I wasn't really part of the crowd, but I drank there anyway.
I enjoyed the regulars' company, but they barely knew my name.
I tried to write on the wall "All that's here will soon be gone."
Will this place we shared somehow live on? But you say:
We didn't share anything. It didn't mean anything to me.
We were dancing with our friends. You were just background in our scene.
Sure you bought a round, but where were you at the late party?
You seem alright, but when they turn on the lights you're not that interesting. You're just not that interesting.
So this band I had, they played one night, and we really brought the house down.
Our friends were there, a girl flashed the room, but the regulars weren't around.
So my big plan to make a big splash, it didn't mean a thing.
The next week one of the bar girls asked "Are you the one that sings?"
They moved to a bigger building, but the smell was part of the charm, will this place we shared some how live on? But you say:
(REPEAT CHORUS)
(Key change/bridge)
I know it's mellodramatic, and I know its been done before: To write a cheap nostalgic song about a place you're homesick for, but the words kept ringing in my head just because they sounded wrong: "Why love a place when I never really belonged?" But you say:
(REPEAT CHORUS 2x)
