The title line came from a qoute in the newspaper, the song then just poured out of me. It is in part about a friend of mine and has a bit of myself in there as well.

Lyrics
Smart to Late, Old to Soon
Harmonica,?intro
I knew a man who knew, all there was to know,
Wouldn?t follow no one, kept no one in tow,
Had no idea, what? he was really doing,
He was smart to late, and old to soon.
Had many opinions, spoke them all but one,
Lived a short life, and he had little fun,
Took his shots along the way, and he licked his own wounds,
He was, smart to late, and old to soon.
Harmonica,?
His friends had said, only a few Friday nights remain,
You must go enjoy them, if you want to stay sane,
So now he finds himself, in his life?s own June.
He got smart to late and old to soon.
Throughout his life there were seeds to sow,
Something to look back upon, that would grow and grow.
But the only thing he left, is written in this tune,
He was, smart to late and old to soon.
Harmonica,?
So time walked on by, teaching lessons as it will,
He stood fast day to day, never getting his fill,
Never had a true love, solitary as the moon,
He was smart to late, and old to soon.
And in his waning years, there was shortness of breath,
A sad sign to all who had, feared this mans death.
Though his spirit rose in the sky, like a hot air balloon,
He got, smart to late and old to soon.
He was, smart to late and old to soon.
