The Devil Wearing Cleats

Story Behind The Song

I created the character Papa Jack, embodying the life of a solitary trucker. Through his eyes, I explored the emotional and practical challenges of deciding to leave behind the trucking life--a career he cherishes deeply.

Song Description

The poignant tale of an experienced truck driver, navigating the journey of life and facing the monumental choice to retire from the career that has defined him--the open road and the world of trucking."

Lyrics

Devil Wearing Cleats

[Verse]
People call him "Papa Jack", he does what truckers do.
He don't bitch about his aching back or the big holes in his shoes.
He's jaded by the buzzards eating roadkill in the street.
His weathered face keeps smilin as he fidgets in his seat.

[Chorus]
He's got a lotta miles sittin on that ol haggard seat.
Burnin up the road like the Devil wearing cleats.
He loves his truckers life alone, shifting through those gears.
Those rollin hills, the droning wheels, as the destination nears.

[Verse]
Countin down those endless miles from Dallas to Van Nuys.
stopping every now and then to rest his weary eyes.
Now he don't smoke and he don't joke, spilt milk don't make him cry.
And with a sigh he mumbles to himself "this seat still ain't right!"...

[Chorus]
He's got a lotta miles sittin on that ol haggard seat.
Burnin up the road like the Devil wearing cleats.
He loves his truckers life alone, shifting through those gears.
Those rollin hills, the droning wheels, as the destination nears.

[Bridge]
For weeks his truck sat idle, we thought he had the flu,
But his smile grew so much bigger as he shared surprising news.
He turned his head, grinned and said, "I ain't drivin my rig no more".
Been lookin through that rear view mirror for 50 years or more,
Adventure is knocking; my heart's tick-tockin, rockin to the beat of a slower drum.
I've put in my time, start sippin good wine.
Gonna have some old fashion fun...that makes me feel young...yeah

[Chorus]
I've got a lotta miles sittin on that ol haggard seat.
Burnin up the road like the Devil wearing cleats.
I loved my truckers life alone, shifting through those gears.
But those rollin hills, the droning wheels, are in the rear view mirror.
Those rollinl hills, the droning wheels, are in my rear view mirror...
