The Bold Princess Royal/The Princess Royal

Song Description

The Bold Princess Royal is a circa 1800 broadside sea song based on the true story of a ship carrying passengers between Halifax and Newfoundland that was attacked by a pirate ship, but was able to escape unharmed. The Princess Royal was originally written in the 1600s by Turlough O'Carolan and called "Miss MacDermott". Later, it was used in a small opera in 1796, and words that were set to this tune describe an encounter between two ship in the English Channel.
