Story Behind The Song
When Coyote's girlfriend persuaded him to move to Salt Lake City, Utah, with promises of fame and fortune, he became a victim of a frontier religious culture that had no interest in a long-haired hippie Buddhist from California. They boycotted him, stuck knives in his door, and sent missionaries to his house telling him, "Move back to California." Coyote was already aware of how people were fooled and lied to by the television and newspapers, but in Utah he got a magnified view of how religion and government can corrupt society and influence people to do terrible and stupid things, while believing they are being good people.
Song Description
The album of the similar name, LEVEL 2 = CHRIST KILLER, was inspired by Coyote's battles with the Mormons of Utah where he realized the brainwashed citizens will horrible things in the name of church and state. Coyote realized that religion and government were creating modern zombies who feed the machine of slavery and self-sacrifice...for someone eles's benefit.

Lyrics
American Zen - Level 2
by The Hippy Coyote
Carry a wallet, with your I.D.
Your ATM card will set you free
For a few minutes, maybe a day
Always something - - in your way
Your parents are losers
Who found their dream
American fools -- think they're choosers
Little cogs in some machine
So big, so big
You can't even see
What you do and what it's for
Every time you walk out your front door
You've been trained by the big big lie
Taught to work until you die
You'll teach your kids the work ethic
Watch them suffer, so pathetic
Saved by Social Security
Your purpose is in obscurity
So chew your grass on someone's farm
Protected by the military arm
Until you're ripe to be hung and bled
You'll never even know what politician you fed
