Story Behind The Song
This song came to me as a result of a girl serving coffee at shop in a university mall. After seeing her over a fairly long period of time, I noticed one day that she had a new hairdo. I said, "Oh, I like your new hair." She obviously took offense to my comment, evidently thinking I was hitting on her (I wasn't) ... I was only being pleasant. Thus, the opening line of the song ... "the girl in the shop who pours my coffee doesn't know who I am." This led to imaginings of a guy trying to get noticed by a girl, yet he knows she already has a boyfriend.
Song Description
A guy has been observing a girl that he has become infatuated with. He wants her to be his girl, but he knows she already has a boyfriend. He knows in his heart that he could get closer to her than he ever could . . . if she only would break up with her boyfriend so that he could move in.
We were really proud of the mix of this song, recorded in my basement studio back in the mid-80s. Our mission was to record a song and make it sound as good as anything you would hear on the radio. No one had to know where we recorded it. We were successful with commercial airplay on around 100 commercial radio stations in Canada plus some airplay world wide. Proud times!

Lyrics
The girl in the shop who pours my coffee
doesn't know who I am
She's always busy serving someone while back in the line I stand
And I'm thinking words to whisper, thoughts of my romance
Soon my turn is coming
I will get the chance
I could get closer to you
I could get closer to you
I could get closer to you
I could get so close to you
The girl at the stop where I always wait
gets on with another guy
He doesn't look like too much to me, but he gets to hold her tight
But lately, I have noticed
she just goes her way
Maybe she can hear me
'cause I always say
I could get closer to you
I could get closer to you
closer . . . closer
I could get closer to you
I could get closer to you
