Never Goin' Home

Story Behind The Song

Having a mother that suffered from an abusive childhood home, I was very passionate about writing a song/story that would empower any victim of abuse to get out of that situation and not return "home".

Song Description

The story is told in the first person point-of-view, as the narrator describes a troubled girl she runs into on a street corner. As the song unfolds, the narrator finds out from the girl that she "took care" of the man that was abusing her back home and she is now running away. She will never return to the home that once held her hostage, and whatever she did to get away from the situation, it was obviously taken care of permanently, as the narrator observes her worry-free smile after boarding the bus.

Lyrics

She was standin on the corner
When the traffic light turned red
She just stood there frozen
With a newspaper on her head
The rain was pourin down
Like a waterfall from Hell
I could see it in her eyes, the pain inside
Of her scarred and broken shell, she said,

"Hey, I'm never goin' home
Hey, I'm better off alone
No more runnin', and hidin',
Pretendin' and cryin'
Hey... I'm never goin' home"
PIm never gopin home... Oh...

I said, "Hey little sister,
Where you been, baby what's your name? (whats your name)
You must have a history,
I'll take you back from where you came"
Then she turned, quick as the night,
And said "I'll never go back there,
Cuz' there's nothin' for me, 'cept misery,
Sometimes life is just unfair..."

Hey, I'm never goin' home
Hey, I'm better off alone
No more runnin', and hidin',
Pretendin' and cryin'
Hey... I'm never goin' home
I'm never, never, never goin home

I asked, "What happened?
What could make someone this way?"
She said, "I don't know, I don't care, but it came to an end today."
And as the bus pulled up, I figured out
She'd taken care of that man...
She made sure he couldn't hurt her no more
And with her suitcase in her hand, she said...

Hey... I'm never goin home...
Hey...

Hey, I'm never goin' home
(Never)
Hey, I'm better off alone
(Better off alone)
No more runnin', and hidin',
Pretendin' and cryin'
Hey... I'm never goin' home
Never...
Better off alone, better off alone
No more runnin' and hidin',
Pretendin' and cryin'
Hey...

And as the bus pulled away,
I saw a smile on her face...
