Lyrics

There's been a shooting on my street,
Down by the swings at dark where we would meet,
We'd smoke and drink and fix the world,
Politics, hunger, free housing, and how boundaries are unfurled.
Cause we were young and knew it all,
Exactly how to win even when we never learned how to fall,
We each pick sides and call out names,
Incanting curses on who to blame for this ailing game.
All from our cells, we've armed the armies,
For the fight to conquer justice with the might of stories,
To lift the crown, but who decides,
Who gets the light in this deep dark tide?
Fields littered, oozing, drenched dark,
In this all mixed in blood, all melding in one mark,
Fights in the streets erupted, burning fast,
Boasted this is the way to live now, built to last.
We scale the wall, try to escape,
Make it to the clearing's end, no time for a break,
In the name of freedom, we start again,
To show the weak just how it's done, let's not pretend.
We're not satisfied to have just some,
A slice, a portion, a meal, a home, so keep the battle drum,
Going strong till there's no one left to tell,
Cause we are right and you are wrong, we wear it well.
The hardships we endured are rough,
The books, the clothes, allowance to the mall, we've had enough,
Now all look great, in the glow of night,
We take a walk where all the shops used to be bright.
Now crumbled ash and blackened stones,
Suppress the smell of noble firs, fresh in the tones,
But we keep trying once again,
As common sense takes one more fall, it's the way of men.
Who is to pay for the expense,
Of perfect society, who holds the recompense?
Who is to say where you're from is not the best,
So don't try and change our imperfect quest.
From our mistakes, we learn to teach the world,
Brace for when we fail and fall, let the flag unfurl,
One thing I know is when we try,
There will be times we take a fall and rise once more to the sky.
