Lyrics

Poor Little Rich Girl
© 2005 Martha Ann Brooks (BMI)

I met her at a club years back
Where I was part of a local act
I was playin guitar in a six piece country band
She was married to the owner then
Tall and blond, eye candy for men
The girl could turn heads a hundred yards away
Her old husband gave her everything
Fur coats and cars and all sorts of rings
He showed her off like a prize around the world

Chorus:
Poor little rich girl
She was never on her own
Poor little rich girl
But she often felt alone
Her life went passing by her in a whirl
Poor little rich girl

She liked to get onstage and sing
She liked to flash those diamond rings
After all, she had paid a price to get ?em
Sometimes it got to be too much
The drugs and drink and all that stuff
But she could not find it in herself to leave him
So she stopped and took another pill
Then stepped right in, she knew the drill
?Til the lights all wrapped around her with a swirl

(Repeat Chorus)

Well, I left that life for a different one
Regular hours, awake with the sun
And lost track of all those folks that I knew then
One afternoon on the radio
I heard the news on a local show
A nightclub owner
Shot his ex-wife in the back
They said the names, I heard myself scream
Killed her and himself ? Must be a bad dream
But it wasn?t
It was the end of both their worlds

(Repeat Chorus)

I can?t believe he was the one
That pulled the trigger on the gun
And laid that girl down in the dust and dirt
Whatever the reason she?s gone now
It doesn?t really matter how
?Cause her sparkle will no longer shine on Earth
Smoke and mirrors, lies on lies
Will come to ruin, will be despised
A price will be paid, people will be hurt

(Repeat Chorus)

You ask me if this story?s true
Yes it is and I still feel blue
When I think about the waste of her young life
If you were there and remember her
Open your heart in a toast to her
Take a minute to recall that pretty smile
Remember she was a beautiful girl
Remember when she sang "Color My World"
And how she sometimes acted like a child

(Repeat Chorus)
